The conflict between heavily trafficked roads or railways and wildlife corridors can often only be resolved through their vertical separation. Such overpasses and underpasses are often expensive. It is therefore prudent to consider their inclusion early in the planning of major projects and to seek to locate such structure where drainage lines or topography assist.
The design of each crossing needs to carefully consider the target species and their specific design requirements, plus the broader public safety, hydraulic, capital and maintenance costs. In addition, other complementary actions or works are often required.
We work with planners, engineers, scientists and designers to help integrate their often conflicting requirements into an overall functional design. Further, we can assist ecologists monitoring the effectiveness of existing wildlife overpasses and underpasses in conceiving improvements that meet overall road design and traffic engineering standards.
